Zardari Defies SC Order On Petroleum Prices

PoL prices hiked through president ordinance

ISLAMABAD: The petroleum product prices have been inflated again through president ordinance as the Petroleum Development Levy has been imposed on petroleum products with immediate effect, Geo news said early on Thursday.

Now, Rs.10 on petrol and Rs.8 have been raised on diesel.

The ordinance has been named as Petroleum Development Levy Ordinance 2009 which president signed early in the morning.

The president signed the written advice from Prime Minister to raise petroleum prices through president ordinance while their copies have been sent to Ministry of Petroleum and Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).

It is pertinent to mention that Supreme Court (SC) suspended the carbon tax surcharge on petroleum products through its ruling on Tuesday.

    SC adjourns POL rate hearing for 4 weeks

    ISLAMABAD: A three-member bench of Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry adjourned the hearing of the plea against hike in petroleum prices for four weeks.

    Attorney General Latif Khosa presented copy of the presidential ordinance in the court. He told the court that the presidential ordinance has imposed petroleum levy, adding that carbon tax has been abolished.

    The apex court adjourned hearing on plea by lawyers of petroleum companies.

    In his observations, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry said government has accepted the court ruling of July 7 now petitioners and opponents should give a chance to proceed according to law.

    This one is hard for lot of intellectuals, on one hand SC should have stayed out and on other Govt should have respected the SC decision. I guess PML – N played the cards beautifully and both SC and govt fell for it. Its amazing no one asking PML – N and others who voted this finance bill in parliment why they decided to go to SC. Why didn’t JUI and PML – N didn’t vote against the bill in the assembly? Using SC to override parliment is not in anyone’s interest including SC.

    Ordinance on petroleum levy challenged in SC

    ISLAMABAD: The Petroleum Development Levy Ordinance 2009 has been challenged in Supreme Court.

    Chaudhry Ikram, the lawyer of PML-N secretary general Iqbal Zafar Jaghra has field a petition challenging the presidential ordinance stated that president have no right to impose tax under constitution article number 77.

    A separate petition also filed pleading Supreme Court to issue stay order for the withdrawal of POL price hike to give masses interim relief.

    According to Geo News correspondent Abdul Qayyum, the hearing of petition will likely started from Monday.

    The president had signed the advice from Prime Minister to raise petroleum prices through president ordinance that restored the POL prices to July 7 position.
