KARACHI: As many as 40 people were killed by midnight and more than 50 injured in various incidents of firing as panic and fear gripped Karachi following the murder of member Sindh assembly belonging to Muttahida Qaumi Movement by unknown assailants in Nazimabad area.
Dozens of vehicles were set on fire by the miscreants after assassination of Raza Haider on Monday. Unknown assailants gunned down the lawmaker and his gunman in a mosque where he came to offer funeral prayers of a relative.
According to Medico Legal Officer of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Raza received six bullets, including two in his head.
Raza, 51, was a member of MQM, which has a political stronghold in Pakistan’s largest city and financial hub. He was elected to the provincial assembly for the first time in 2008 general elections.
MQM has announced three-day mourning on the murder of its leader.
The riots broke out immediately after the murder in Karachi, Hyderabad and other cities of Sindh. As many as 40 people had died by midnight and more than 150 injured in various incidents of firing.
The mob torched dozens of vehicles on fire, including private cars and public transport in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal B Area, Orangi Town, Nazimabad and other areas.
A passenger bus was burned down on Abu Hassan Isphani road in Karachi.
Several petrol pumps were set on fire and the roads wore a deserted look. Aerial firing was also reported across the city.
Markets closed down immediately after the incident and the masses started rushing to the safety of their homes which created the worst kind of traffic jams on almost all city roads.
Police and rangers have taken control of Karachi and other restive areas and the general public has been appealed to remain confined to their homes.
The death of the MQM leader comes in the midst of a series of target killings in the city in which some 40 activists of different political and religious parties have been killed in the month of July.
The MQM and the Awami National Party which represents the Pakhtuns have been at loggerheads for the last few months in the midst of the target killings despite being part of the coalition government in the province.
Both blame each other for the target killings while the MQM blames the ANP for supporting the land mafia and drug dealers.
The government later announced closure of the educational institutions in Karachi, Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas in the wake of violent incidents.

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Tuesday demanded the government of launching an operation against Taliban, land and drug mafias operating in Karachi, and accused ANP of supporting Taliban in the city.
“Our leader Altaf Hussain was warning the government for years of growing Talibanization in Karachi and demanding subsequent steps to counter it but it paid no heed to our calls,” Anis Kaimkhani, a member of MQM Coordination Committee, told a news conference at party headquarters, 90.
“Our workers are being preyed to these mafias for months in this city but government took no action. Now they have hit one of our leaders,” Kaimkhani said referring to the murder of party’s MPA Raza Haider who was assassinated Monday.
MQM leader accused Awami National Party (ANP), its partner in provincial coalition government and longtime rival in Karachi, of supporting Taliban and land and drug mafias in the city.

KARACHI: Over 61 people have been gunned down so far as violent incidents including firing and torching of properties since Monday evening have been raging fiercely while over 150 persons have been reportedly injured during last three days, Geo News reported.
Scores of shops, vehicles, houses and pushcarts have been burnt to aches by unidentified miscreants despite the nonstop patrolling of heavy contingents from law enforcement agencies on roads and streets in Karachi.
The spate of violent incidents, ransacking, torching of shops, firing started shortly after the news of assassination of MQM’s MPA Syed Raza Haider spread like a wildfire, which is still continued and undergoing its worst state.
Reports of aerial firing were also reported from many areas throughout night, which has triggered a massive panic among people while worthwhile properties were also set on fire on different places.
Life in Karachi has remained at standstill as all the markets, schools, colleges, commercial areas, public and private transport, petrol and CNG pumps have been seen on complete closure.
As many as 61 persons have been shot dead while more than 150 injured people have been admitted to hospital during last 36 hours.
Meanwhile, 40 vehicles, many furniture markets, tea hotels, carpet shops, 10 trucks, pushcarts, garments shops have been set ablaze in different areas.
Some reports of shootouts have also reached here from Cakt Pahari locality where unidentified miscreants comprising two political parties clashed with heavy weapons, which gripped area residents in fear.
Many armed activists of political parties continued patrolling on roads at night and left no chance in vain to cause harm to innocent people.
Three houses have been set on fire in Qasba Colony while fire brigade activists are in constant state of denial to go to panic-hit areas due to lapse of security.
Forces closure of business, shops, hotels were also seen all the day on Tuesday.

ARY: Shoot at sight orders issued in Karachi: Malik
Minister for Interior Rehman Malik has issued shoot at sight orders for the violators of law and order in the Karachi after targeted killings in the city claimed more than 80 lives over the last 3 days, ARY NEWS reports.
In an apparent damage-control move, the minister paid his visit to Karachi for reconciliation between Pakistan People Partly-led governments’ allies – the Muttahid Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Parly – who were blaming each other for the bloodshed in Karachi.
Addressing a news conference here at MQM headquarter Nine Zero, the minister vehemently condemned the assassination of MQM MPA Raza Haider.
Malik on the occasion assured that stern action would be taken against miscreants and rioters in the city without any discrimination.
Malik told the newsmen that shoot-on-sight orders had been given to police and other law-enforcement agencies in Karachi.
“I have issued shoot at sight orders to the police and Rangers and no criminal would be spared by the law-enforcers,” he announce.
He said “Pakistan is passing through crucial timings and in such a time we can’t afford any turmoil and upheaval in the financial hub of the country…together we must foil the designs of those who are bent upon destabilizing the country.”
