    ARY: Musharraf launches political party

ONDON:Pakistan’s ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf apologized Friday for mistakes made during his last term in office, as he launched a bid to return to power.

Musharraf told scores of cheering supporters that he made decisions which had negative repercussions for his nation of 175 million. But the leader who stepped down in 2008 amid protests and under the threat of impeachment did not elaborate on what the mistakes had been.

“I take this opportunity to apologize,” he said. “Human beings make mistakes.”

The 67-year-old former leader spoke as he launched a new political party, arguing that no political alternative in his country now shows any hope of alleviating the “darkness that prevails in Pakistan.” He said under his regime there would be progress in every field.

“I have confidence I can lead Pakistan toward light,” he said.

Numerous terror plots and attacks, including the 2005 suicide bombings that killed 52 commuters in London and an active plot to wage Mumbai-style shooting sprees in Europe, have been seeded in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

Musharraf declared that he had the experience to tackle the challenges of al-Qaida, the Taliban in the mountainous tribal regions, and the spread of extremism in Pakistan. He insisted that unless Pakistan was part of the fight against terrorism and extremism, “that fight will not succeed.”

The entire judicial system is a mess. For that matter the country is a mess. Even the army can’t do anything. If they get in they will have to use the same power elites to stay in power. By the way this rot is not new. It has been there for centuries. Even the Brits ruled India using this system. Unfortunately the power of the select fews has increased more then ever before. Revolution is the only solution but the Americans will stand in it’s way

ARY: NATO allowed Taliban official to Kabul: Petraeus

LONDON: NATO-led forces facilitated the passage of a senior Taliban commander to Kabul to hold talks with the Afghan government, the commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan said on Friday.

U.S. General David Petraeus, commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said the move was part of U.S. and NATO support for President Hamid Karzai’s reconciliation discussions with the Taliban.

“In certain respect we do facilitate that, given that, needless to say it would not be the easiest of tasks for a senior Taliban commander to enter Afghanistan and make his way to Kabul if ISAF were not….aware of it and therefore allows it to take place,” he told an audience in London.

Petraeus said several “very senior” Taliban leaders had reached out to the Afghan government and other countries engaged in Afghanistan. However, he said the discussions were preliminary in nature.

“They certainly would not rise to the level of being called negotiations,” he said.

U.S. and NATO leaders said on Thursday they were ready to help Afghan President Hamid Karzai pursue reconciliation efforts with the Taliban. Pakistan said on Friday it was willing to assist such talks.

PPP on Saturday issued showcase notices to its senior leaders Sherry Rehman and Senator Safdar Abbasi and also suspended Central Executive Committee (CEC) membership of the later over his participation in a talkshow on Tuesday.

Abbasi is a veteran party leader who often faces discriminatory behavior from the party leadership for being a critic of party co-chairman President Asif Ali Zardari.

Abbasi and his wife Naheed Khan were very close to the slain PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto when she lived.

He said he received an email form party’s General Secretary Jahangir Badar today which stated that he (Abbasi) was being suspended from the CEC for violating party discipline.

Talking to a private news TV, he said “I don’t know who is giving policies and who decision maker in party is”.

He said it was high time that the party should define the discipline and violation of its rules. I have already submitted my reply, he added.

He firmly said that he would join the talkshows and express his opinion if invited in the future. “I don’t believe on such policies,” he said.

On the other hand, score of women in Karachi staged protest demonstration against Sherry Rehman for her participation in a talkshow.

ARY: PPP offers olive branch to PML-Q

LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party on Monday offered an olive branch to Pakistan Muslim League Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q) in order to strengthen the ruling party’s policy of reconciliation, ARY NEWS reports.

Federal Minster for Law Babar Awan, after a nod from the Presidency, held a one-on-one meeting with PML-Q leader and former Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi at his residence today, which according to political analysts is a bid to get space in Punjab politics.

Awan, while addressing a joint press conference with Elahi, said they just exchanged views over the current political scenario and exchanged views over challenges facing the country.

He said the only way forward in the problems ‘is national reconciliation’. “We realize that keeping on board all the political forces and joining hands with them is necessary for democracy and people of Pakistan.”

He observed that PML-Q ‘is stakeholder and participator’ of the democratic system, and said ‘politics is inclusive job…democracy can’t be stabilized without people’s participation.’

Awan said Elahi and he shared same opinion on national and democratic issues. He said “Both the parties have same interests, and the PPP ‘respects mandate of PML-Q’.

The minister said he agreed with the suggestions of Pervaiz Elahi and would convey it to the Prime Minister and the President.

He was of the view that confrontation within political parties ultimately hits common people, and urge tolerance and harmony among the democratic asparties. “It’s the only way forward for people of Pakistan.”

Awan said he had also held meetings with leaders of various political parties which are either inside or outside the Parliament and discussed national issues with them.

“I have also met Chaudhry Shujat Hussain few days back on a cup of tea but no camera was there,” he told reports.

Addressing the news briefing, the PML-Q leader said “our parties are agreed that all the political forces should sit together to resolve national issues.”

In politics, he said, the doors of dialogues should be opened.

Ruling PPP has decided to boost links with PML-Q after the ongoing efforts by Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and other PML factions for political alliance.

The high-level contacts between the two parties will likely to boost up political activities in the country ahead of local body elections which Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani says might be held next year.

Asma Jehangir secured 834 votes against 796 votes bagged by her closest competitor Ahmed Owais in SCBA polls.

According to unofficial results of vote count so far: Karachi – Asma Jehangir 114 votes, Ahmed Owais 104; Lahore – Asma 419 votes, Owais 409; Multan – Asma 44, Owais 45; Quetta – Asma 42, Owais 29; Bahawalpur – Asma 27, Owais 29; Islamabad – Asma 124, Owais 136; Abbotabad – Asma 17, Owais 11 and; Peshawar – Asma 47, Owais 33.

President Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif, former president Pervez Musharraf and MQM Chief Altaf Hussain felicitated Asma Jehangir on her historic win.

Ahmed Owais admitted his defeat by accepting the poll results.

  • SA Chaudhary says:

FOR ASMA JEHANGIR: It is a matter of great pleasure that a woman in Pakistan has succeeded as being elected as President of Pakistan Bar Council. But right from the day, she has been elected as President, she is indirectly intending to convey some message and her wordings speak volume. She also spoke that by now the Lawyers would not speak the tongue of Judges???. Today I am watching ARY news Channel and Honourable Asma Jehangir was speaking to the said news Channel. I am sorry to say that from her wording it appears that she was talking as if she is spokesman(spokeswoman) for government and in a way she has defended most of government scandals. She has taken the issue of Haj very lightly. I think she is not aware as to how long the corruption in this matter has maligned our country. I think she is also aware about the corruption cases regarding the personalities who are running this government. These cases do not relate to human rights? There should be accountability irrespective of position of anyone or the party to whom such personality relates. There are number of persons who are in different renowned parties but they are roaming here and there despite the fact that they are corrupt persons. I request Asma Jehangir that she should not take these matters lightly and should raise her voice against these hard problems facing to our beloved country.

    • afzaalkhan says:

Aasma as usual doing the bid of her masters. Wasn’t long she was entertaining indian troops at wahaga border by dancing putting haar and offering sweets to them while they crush kashmiris. Too bad Aasma can’t see human rights violation in Kashmir, palestine, Iraq but is handy to defend Zardari. If her argument is she is not a spokeperson of judiciary and everyone should butt out then she should follow her on directive and stay neutral on cases in SC saying its subjudicious or the verdict has been delievered and we have to follow it.
