NDTV: CBI website hacked by ‘Pak Cyber Army’

New Delhi: In a major embarrassment, the website of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was hacked on Friday night by programmers identifying themselves as “Pakistani Cyber Army”.

The home page of the CBI website had a message from the ‘Pakistani Cyber Army’ warning the Indian Cyber Army not to attack their websites.

The CBI website, supposed to be one of the most secure websites, is connected to the command centre of world police organisation – Interpol – 24×7.

The message from the hackers also spoke about the filtering controls provided by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), a body which mans computer servers across the country. It also claims to have hacked another 270 websites.

Intelligence agencies have been often warning the government that proper cyber security was not being ensured in government offices and that no security audit was being carried out.

The website has still not been restored. In a late night statement, the investigating agency said, “CBI is aware that its official website has been hacked and defaced. An inquiry has been launched and necessary remedial measures are underway to restore it.”

Speaking on the issue, Supreme Court advocate and cyber law expert Pavan Duggal said the hacking of CBI website is an act of cyber war. “I think this is not a mere hacking incident. It is a step towards a cyber war,” he said.

Ok i get it pakistani elites are shameless and american stooges could someone plz explain wassup with UK :p

Guardian: WikiLeaks cables: Conservatives promised to run ‘pro-American regime’

Conservative party politicians lined up before the general election to promise that they would run a “pro-American regime” and buy more arms from the US if they came to power this year, the leaked American embassy cables show.

Despite British leaders’ supportive stance, the dispatches also reveal – in what some will see as humiliating detail – how US diplomats in London are amused by what they call Britain’s “paranoid” fears about the so-called special relationship.

One said the anxious British attitude “would often be humorous if it were not so corrosive” and that it was tempting to take advantage of this neurosis to “make London more willing to respond favourably when pressed for assistance”. The UK was said to offer “unparalleled” help in promoting America’s aims.

Liam Fox, now the defence secretary, promised to buy American military equipment, while the current foreign secretary, William Hague, offered the ambassador a “pro-American” government. Hague also said the entire Conservative leadership were, like him, “staunchly Atlanticist” and “children of Thatcher”.

Fox met the US ambassador, Louis Susman, a year ago. In a 10 December 2009 cable marked “confidential”, Susman recorded: “Liam Fox affirmed his desire to work closely with the US if the Conservative party wins power … adding that ‘we (Conservatives) intend to follow a much more pro-American profile in procurement’.” He reportedly went on: “Increasing US-UK ‘interoperability is the key’ since the US and UK will continue to fight together in the future” and “expressed confidence regarding US leadership in Afghanistan and optimism about the way forward”.

The frontbencher admitted that there was an opposed faction within Tory ranks. “Fox asserted that some within the Conservative party are less enthusiastic, asserting that ‘we’re supposed to be partners with, not supplicants to, the United States’. Fox said he rebuffed these assertions, and he welcomed the ambassador’s reassurance that senior US leaders value the UK as an equal partner.”

Hague pledged his own loyalty in an earlier meeting with the US deputy chief of mission, Richard LeBaron. A confidential cable marked “no foreigners” from 1 April 2008 records: “The deputy chief of mission asked Hague whether the relationship between the UK and the US was ‘still special’. Hague said he, David Cameron and George Osborne were ‘children of Thatcher’ and staunch Atlanticists … For his part, said Hague, he has a sister who is American, spends his own vacations in America and, like many similar to him, considers America the ‘other country to turn to’.

“Asking his senior adviser her views, [Arminka] Helic (who is Bosnian), said: ‘America is the essential country.’

“Hague said whoever enters 10 Downing Street as prime minister soon learns of the essential nature of the relationship with America. He went on: ‘We want a pro-American regime. We need it. The world needs it.’ ”

LeBaron noted dryly: “This period of excessive UK speculation about the relationship is more paranoid than usual … This over-reading would often be humorous, if it were not so corrosive.”

He advised against taking advantage of British neuroses and said the UK remained highly useful to the US because of its “unparalleled” help in promoting America’s aims. “Though tempting to argue that keeping HMG off balance about its current standing with us might make London more willing to respond favourably when pressed for assistance, in the long run it is not in US interests to have the UK public concluding the relationship is weakening, on either side.

“The UK’s commitment of resources – financial, military, diplomatic – in support of US global priorities remains unparalleled; a UK public confident that the USG values those contributions and our relationship, matters to US national security.”

Geo: SC charges Sher Khan with court contempt

Supreme Court (SC) has charged DG Concessions of Petroleum Ministry Sher Muhammed Khan with contempt of court in a case regarding the sale of British Petroleum shares, Geo News reported Wednesday.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday heard the petition filed by former chief Jamaat-e-Islami, Qazi Hussain Ahmed regarding alleged corruption in repurchasing assets of British Petroleum Company (BPL) on exorbitant rates.

It should be mentioned here that the court yesterday issued a show cause notice to Director General Petroleum (DGP) Sher Muhammad Khan for using contemptuous language regarding the litigations which were pending before the courts.

Qazi Hussain in his petition, objected to government’s move to purchase its sold out assets from British Petroleum (BP) at exorbitant rates.

Guardian: Julian Assange denied bail over sexual assault allegations

Assange, 39, who is wanted in Sweden over claims he sexually assaulted two women, was in Wandsworth prison last night after district judge Howard Riddle ruled there was a risk he would fail to surrender if granted bail. Assange denies the allegations.

Despite Jemima Khan, former wife of Pakistan cricket captain Imran Khan, the campaigning journalist John Pilger, the film director Ken Loach and others offering to stand surety totalling £180,000, the judge said the Australian Assange’s “weak community ties” in the UK, and his “means and ability” to abscond, represented “substantial grounds” for refusing bail.

Gemma Lindfield, for the Swedish prosecutors, said the first involved complainant A, who said she was the victim of “unlawful coercion” on the night of 14 August in Stockholm. The court heard Assange is accused of using his body weight to hold her down in a sexual manner.

The second charge alleged Assange “sexually molested” Miss A by having sex with her without a condom when it was her “express wish” one should be used.

The third charge claimed Assange “deliberately molested” Miss A on 18 August “in a way designed to violate her sexual integrity”. The fourth charge accused Assange of having sex with a second woman, Miss W, on 17 August without a condom while she was asleep at her Stockholm home.

Lindfield argued there was a “high risk of flight” because of Assange’s “lifestyle, connections and potential assets”.

uruknet.info: Taliban not responsible for cutting Aisha’s nose, ears: AIHRC

TIRINKOT (PAN): The Taliban were not behind the slicing off of a woman’s nose and ears in central Uruzgan province, chief of the human rights commission said on Monday.

The story of how Aisha Bibi, 19, was mutilated as punishment for running away from her abusive husband and in-laws a year ago caused an international outcry. She was given refuge by an Afghan non-governmental organization, and sent to the US for reconstructive surgery and psychological treatment.

Much of the western media blamed the Taliban for the brutal act, saying Aisha’s husband was a Taliban member and he and his father had orchestrated the punishment. The Taliban, however, denied any involvement.

On Monday, Abdul Ghaffar Stanakzay, head of the AIHRC in Uruzgan, also absolved the Taliban after what he said was a “thorough investigation of the case”.

“This was because of domestic violence which Aisha fell victim to,” he told reporters.

Aisha’s father in law, Sulaiman, was arrested last week. The provincial council chief, Juma Gul Himmat, said he had confessed to holding Aisha down while someone else cut her. But Suliaman denies ever confessing.

Sulaiman said Aisha had run away from his home four times.

“Once, police even arrested her in Kandahar,” he said.

After the last time, he handed her back to her father, Mohammadzai.

“This was a stigma. I left the country and went to Pakistan,” he said.

After that, Sulaiman claimed he had no information about how his daughter-in-law’s nose and ear were cut. However, he did not rule out his son, Qudratullah’s, involvement, or even Aisha’s father.

“I swear to God, Aisha’s father asked me to kill her but I refused.”

Mohammadzai, however, strongly denied he had ordered the killing of his own daughter.

He admitted he had sent Aisha back to her husband but said three days later, “I saw my daughter without a nose and ears”.

He blamed Sulaiman for the attack and said he feared the law would not punish him.

“I have to leave the country because my life is at stake; Haji Sulaiman can be released anytime.”

He asked the international community to bring his daughter back from the US to her own house in the province.

Mohammadzai also denied the Taliban’s hand in the incident.

Aisha was 12 when she was married, below the legal minimum age of 16.

ARY: MQM gives 10 days to PPP to explain allegations

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has given 10 days to the Pakistan Peoples Party government to explain Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza’s allegations that MQM was involved in Karachi target killing, ARY NEWS reports.

Briefing newsmen after MQM’s Coordination Committee, party leader Raza Haroon urged PPP leadership to explain Mirza’s statement within 10 days, “Otherwise the MQM will announce its plan of action in the light of public opinion,” he warned.

Condemning the minister’s statement, Haroon termed it ‘provoking’ and ‘conspiracy to disintegrate the country’.

He asked PPP leadership to explain either the views were Mirza’s personal opinion or PPP’s policy. “Why any action has not been taken in this regard if the statement is not PPP’s policy,” he questioned.

Mirza, while addressing a ceremony on Monday, said 26 of 60 target killers arrested in Karachi were found associated with MQM.

The session was chaired by MQM leader and founder Altaf Hussain, on a conference call from self-imposed exile in London.

The meeting was considered crucial one in the wake of JUIF’s walked out of the government, triggering fears of a domino effect.

However, the MQM did not take any decision to part its ways with the government.

Haroon said “MQM is a democratic party and believes on resolving the issues with reconciliation; therefore we will not take any emotional decision.”

He said the emergent meeting reviewed the departure of JUI-F from the government.

About JUI-F’s defection, he said “Difference of opinion is beauty of democracy and everyone’s right.” He urged upon the PPP leadership to address the concerns of its ruling allies immediately.

“We discussed the current political situation and the ruling Pakistan People Party’s (PPP) behaviour towards its allies,” Haroon said.

Geo: CIA station chief pulled from Islamabad

WASHINGTON: The CIA has pulled its top spy out of Pakistan after threats were made against his life, current and former US officials said, an unusual move for the US and a complication on the front lines of the fight against al-Qaida.

The CIA station chief was in transit Thursday after a Pakistani lawsuit earlier this month accused him by name of killing civilians in missile strikes.

CIA airstrikes from unmanned aircraft have killed many innocent people. The US does not acknowledge the missile strikes, but there have been more than 100 such attacks this year – more than double the amount in 2009.

The lawsuit blew the American spy’s cover, leading to threats against him and forcing the US to call him home, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

CIA officials’ “serious concerns” for the station chief’s safety led to the decision to bring him home, a US official said. A spokeswoman for the spy agency, Jennifer Youngblood, declined to comment.

The Pakistani lawsuit also named CIA Director Leon Panetta and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

The CIA’s work is unusually difficult in Pakistan, one of the nation’s most important and at times frustrating counterterrorism allies.

The station chief in Islamabad operates as a secret general in the US war against terrorism. He runs the Predator drone program targeting terrorists, handles some of the CIA’s most urgent and sensitive tips.

It’s rare for a CIA station chief to see his cover blown. In 1999, an Israeli newspaper revealed the identity of the station chief in Tel Aviv. In 2001, an Argentine newspaper printed a picture of the Buenos Aires station chief and details about him. In both instances, the station chiefs were recalled to the US.

Geo: 24 militants killed, 11 soldiers martyred in Mohmand gunfights

PESHAWAR: The insurgents launched attacks on five paramilitary checkpoints in Mohmand Agency Friday, leaving at least 11 soldiers and 24 militants dead, officials said.

“At least 11 of our men have been martyred and 12 others wounded,” Amjad Ali Khan, the administrator of lawless Mohmand tribal district, told reporters at a press conference in the area’s main town, Ghalanai.

Security officials earlier said at least three soldiers were martyred in the attacks.

Khan said that at least 24 militants were killed when paramilitary soldiers “befittingly repulsed” the attack at five checkpoints near the border with Afghanistan. “The army has sent helicopter gunships and bombed suspected hide outs of Taliban,” Khan said.
Earlier a senior security official told: “About 150 Taliban militants attacked five Frontier Corps checkposts in Baidnami village near the border with Afghanistan. Security forces had cordoned off the area and were searching for the fleeing militants, he said, while reinforcements were sent in “to beef up the checkpoints”.

Local administration officials in Ghalanai and the paramilitary force confirmed the attack and casualties.
